How to record your screen with audio on Mac
The built-in macOS recorder (Shift-Command-5) can record your microphone but not the sound your Mac plays. To record both the computer’s audio and your voice, use a screen recorder that captures system audio, such as BaseShot (free).
With BaseShot
- Download and open BaseShot. It runs from the menu bar.
- Click the BaseShot icon in the menu bar and choose Record Screen.
- Select what to record: drag an area, or pick a window or display.
- Open the System audio menu and choose Record system audio from all apps, or from selected apps only.
- Open the Microphone menu and pick your microphone. Add your camera too if you want to appear in the video.
- Click Start Recording. Use Pause if you need a break.
- Click Done, then click Edit on the preview to open the recording in the editor, where you can trim it, adjust zooms, and add captions.
- Click Export recording and choose MP4 to keep the audio. GIF exports have no sound.
The first time, macOS asks for permission. Allow BaseShot in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, and allow the microphone when asked.
Make the recording easier to follow
- Turn on Auto zoom in Recording options so the video zooms into your clicks automatically.
- Turn on Show keystrokes so viewers can see the shortcuts you press.
- Turn on Improve microphone audio in the editor to reduce background noise.
- Generate captions in the editor. They are created on your Mac, and you can edit the words.
