How to add a background to a screenshot
To make a screenshot look polished for social posts, docs, or slides, place it on a background with some padding, rounded corners, and a soft shadow. With BaseShot (free for Windows and Mac), you open the screenshot in the editor, click Add background, and pick a gradient or color.
With BaseShot
- Download and open BaseShot. It runs from the system tray on Windows and the menu bar on Mac.
- Take a screenshot with Capture Area, Capture Window, or Capture Full Screen.
- Click Edit on the preview to open the screenshot in the editor.
- Click Add background and choose one of the Gradients or a Plain color.
- Adjust Padding, Corners, and Shadow until it looks right.
- Pick a Ratio such as 16:9, 1:1, or 4:5 to fit where you’ll post it, and use Alignment to position the screenshot.
- Click Done, then copy or save the image.
Tips
- Use 16:9 for slides and YouTube thumbnails, 1:1 for most social posts, and 4:5 or 9:16 for phone screens.
- Keep the background quieter than the screenshot so the content stands out.
- Use Inset to add a frame around the screenshot, which helps light screenshots stand out on light backgrounds.
- Choose Use transparent background to keep the padding and shadow without a colored background.
